Hi Friends..... Here I take you thru the restoration of a very cool and rare early (first 200) Style O. Part of what makes it special was it is made of STEEL, not brass as was eventually used consistently. This guitar was not touched since the early sixties! Note the amount of dust sitting on the cone. Also, the seller was very kind to send pics that were taken in 1958 of the original owner and his son's fooling around in the kitchen. None of these fellow Italiano's are still w us. (My Mom is 100% Italian!) The youngest died just recently at 69. Note also the personalization of the headstock....diamond inlays w a steel plate w the guys initials. (I'm sending it back to the family) I actually decided to overlay a 1/32 piece of maple over it and use a new decal to solve the issue. I sprayed some stain then clear over the front and sides of the headstock ONLY, then roughed it up to blend it in with the rest of the neck. Those diamonds were drilled into the headstock! I made a nice necklace for the wife w em........ kidding. Note also, the crude early headstock slots. See how the top are squared off? They eventually rounded that out, I can see where the two pairs of saw blades dropped down to make these cuts from above. Also note after resetting the neck I used the modern National Reso neck block to improve this semi flawed original design of two sticks alongside the neckstick. The original cone was shot, so I used a minty one from a 35 Duolian. Back of the neck was gorgeous. Once put back together and a last bit of polishing, it's just a monster! Great guitar!!! Fun stuff, I love bringing these patients back to life, it's ready for the next 75 years! |
